Domaine-Leroy Winery

Lalou Bize-Leroy is probably the most highly respected négociant-éléveurs in Burgundy. Starting with her family negociant business Maison Leroy, she produced enormously expensives wines which were regarded as some of the best available. Taking up the position of co-manager of Domaine de la Romanee-Conti after her father from 1988-1992. During this time she started purchasing new vineyards adding to the 4 ha she and her husband have in Domaine D'Auvenay.

Her personnal domaines are based in Saint Romain but with village and premier cru vineyards in Meursault, Auxey-Duresses and Puligny; plus the Grand Crus of Chevalier Montrachet, Criots-Batard Montrachet, Bonnes Mares and Mazis Chambertin. We are lucky enough to get tiny parcels of d’Auvenay wines (no more than a dozen or so bottles of each) along-side the domaine wines from Domaine Leroy! Admirers of Coche Dury or Domaine Leflaive (and lets face it, who isn’t!) would be well advised to take a very serious look at these d’Auvenays…even at the seemingly stratospheric prices!

WHAT THE CRITCS ARE SAYING

"I have said it so many times that it may be rebundant, but for readers who by-passed purchasing my heavyweight 1990 tome, Burgundy, let me repeat it - Lalou Bize-Leroy stands alone at the top of Burgundy's quality hierarchy. Because she is a perfectionnist, and because she has had the courage to produce wines from low yield and bottle them naturelly, without fining or filtration".
Robert M. PARKER Jr's, Guide PARKER des Vins de France

"This is the greatest estate in Burgundy...
How do you determine great? Is it size? Is it quality? Is it price? Is it "reputation" (what ever that is)? Is it the amount of media coverage? However you do compute it, the greatest domaines of Burgundy today must be those under the control of Lalou Bize : The Domaine Leroy and her own Domaine d'Auvenay. The estates of Jadot, Faiveley and Bouchard Père & Fils are far larger, that of Romanée-Conti the most splendid in terms of percentage of grand terroir, but for nobility of it's wines, pride of place must go to Leroy and to the Domaine d'Auvenay. The sheer concentration, depth and intensity Lalou Bize manages to squeeze into her bottles is brethtaking".

Domaine D'Auvenay Auxey-Duresses 2002

The fruit here is perhaps even a touch riper than the Les Clous with decidedly bigger, richer and denser flavors that offer more depth and simply incredible levels of dry extract. In fact, there is so much of it that this has a certain chewy quality to the intensely long and pure flavors. This is another stunning wine at this level. 91 Points Allen Meadows, Burghound,    Producer .....

Domaine D'Auvenay Bonnes Mares 2003

94 Points Burghound

"An exceptionally ripe, gorgeously complex nose that remains very pinot in character leads to sweet, rich, strikingly intense and remarkably concentrated full-bodied flavors blessed with buckets of pinot extract and ample baby fat, all wrapped in dense but extremely fine tannins. This is a big, very powerful, slightly warm wine yet the finish is velvety, even silky and the sheer depth of ex .....

Domaine D'Auvenay Mersault 1er Cur 'Les Narvaux' 2011

93 Points Wine Advocate

"This is more aromatically complex if not more refined with its ultra-pure nose of green apple, lemon, acacia blossom and wet stone scents. There is excellent ripeness to the very rich yet impressively well-detailed flavors that possess superb volume before culminating in an intensely mineral-driven, bone dry and massively long finish. Villages level Meursault rarely gets any better than this .....

Domaine D'Auvenay Puligny Montrachet Folatieres 2003

92 Points Burghound

Very ripe aromas of fresh hay, citrus and anise lead to herb-infused full, rich and wonderfully complex and textured flavors that don't have the precision of the En la Richard but possess better overall depth plus huge length. This is lively with plenty of punch on the finish and carries a gentle hint of warmth. 92 Points Allen Meadows, Burghound,    Producer note: In contras .....

Domaine Leroy Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru les Charme 2008

94 Points Burghound

"An extract of raspberry-liqueur and high-toned floral aromas leads to rich, generous and utterly beguiling medium-bodied flavors that exude copious amounts of dry extract that buffers the firm but ripe tannins on the powerful and explosive finish. This is a generous yet very serious wine that despite its impressive size and weight manages to retain a clear link with its Chambolle roots.&qu .....

Domaine Leroy Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru 2006

"Comments: Don't miss! This is quite ripe though not surmature, featuring a fresh array of distinctly earthy and ever so slightly rustic red and blue fruit aromas that are in perfect keeping with the robust, muscled and powerful full-bodied flavors underpinned by mouth coating tannins and superb concentration on the strikingly long finish. As impressive as this is, and it's very .....

Domaine Leroy Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru 2008

96 Points Burghound

"A brooding and almost stubborn nose features floral, earthy and dense dark berry fruit aromas that precede robust, powerful and broad-scaled flavors that brim with buckets of dry extract that push the vigorous and mildly rustic tannins to the background on the explosive and almost painfully intense finish that possesses plenty of the hallmark youthful austerity. Stylistically, this is more .....

Domaine Leroy Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru 2007

"A surprisingly elegant and dense red berry fruit nose that is at once earthy and ever so mildly animale delivers breathtaking complexity complements to perfection the big, rich and sleekly muscled flavors that are very firmly structured but not aggressively so and the sheer depth of material on the palate-drenching but youthfully austere finish is outstanding. This is a powerful Clos de Vo .....

Domaine Leroy Corton-Renardes Grand Cru 2006

"Despite the fact that this is much less open and expressive than any of the preceding wines, there is simply another dimension present and the aromatic depth is flat out fantastic with earthy and pungently animale aromas that border on the feral and this intensely sauvage character continues onto the rich, powerful and exceptionally concentrated flavors that are brooding, mouth coating and .....

Domaine Leroy Nuit St George 2006

91 Points Wine Advocate

"Bize-Leroy this year amalgamated the fruits of Allots, Bas de Combe, and Lavieres – each subjected to separate bottlings in 2005 – into a single 2006 Nuits-St.-Georges. Scents of extremely ripe black fruits and peach accompanied by subtle smokiness lead into a sumptuously ripe, creamy palate that preserves the primary fruit juiciness and exhibits the textural refinement and lif .....

“An extract of dark berry fruit nose that is notably pure introduces rich and impressively constructed medium plus-bodied flavors that possess a sappy and textured mouth feel on the balanced and solidly persistent finish. Domaine Leroy Romanee St. Vivant 2007

"The most aromatically complex wine to this point with seductively attractive earthy red berry fruit aromas that offer an exuberant spiciness with a contrasting touch of underbrush which merge into elegant and very fine mineral-infused middle weight flavors that are rich, intense and possess impressive mid-palate concentration as well as a subtle minerality. Domaine Leroy Romanee St. Vivant 1992

"As the Leroy Brulées often is, this still shows relatively big, almost burly fruit that has now largely gone secondary and robust if now softened flavors that still pack good power and sleek muscle on the moderately long finish. This is not a great wine in an absolute sense but it is most assuredly a fine effort in the context of a barely average vintage. This has peaked but it should .....

"This is a clear step up in aromatic depth if not elegance with its stylish, pure and expressive nose redolent of ample amounts of pungent Savigny earth and underbrush suffusing the ripe red and dark pinot fruit aromas trimmed in noticeable if subtle oak that marries into exceptionally rich, round and sweet flavors oozing with dry extract that, at present anyway, completely buffer the under .....

"Comments: Outstanding! Mild reduction knocks down the expressiveness of the nose though there is good freshness and vibrancy to the very rich, full and pungently earthy flavors that completely coat the mouth on the beguilingly textured, intense and palate staining finish that delivers huge length though there is a slight trace of warmth discernable right at the very end. Domaine Leroy Vosne-Romanée Les Beaux Monts 1er Cru 2006

"In 2006, the Beaux Monts is perhaps the one wine in the Leroy range that truly exceeds its normal level of excellence with a more elegant and higher-toned nose of anise, soy, hoisin and cinnamon that reside in the layered, cool and relatively reserved blue and black fruit aromas. The detailed, pure, energetic and driving flavors brim with minerality and are underpinned by sophisticated tan .....
