Egly-Ouriet Winery

Egly-Ouriet along with Selosse and Larmandier-Bernier, make up the holy trinity of great grower Champagnes. They are some of only a handful of growers who follow biodynamic, organic or 'living soil' principals of viticulture. These three producers do not use chemical fertilisers, herbicides, pesticides or chemical anti-fungal sprays; they work on very low yields (roughly half the regional average); produce vineyard or village specific wines; minimise the use of sugar addition and follow a very natural winemaking regime with no fining or filtration and low levels of sulphur. All these factors combined – in particular the belief in ‘site-specific’ wines - is offering a wonderful challenge to the traditional Champagne methodology of high yields, high dosage and blending across many communes to achieve a house style. In many ways, the Egly-Ouriet Domaine has been at the forefront of this movement. For example, the Egly family was one of the very few growers in Champagne who always refused to use gadoux (ground city rubbish) as fertiliser on their precious vineyards. The brillant Egly vineyards (Grand Cru & Pinot Noir dominant), the natural viticulture and low yields and the high percentage of reserve wine used, are the main reasons why the Egly-Ouriet wines taste so different - so fruit-pure, intense, rich and complex.

WHAT THE CRITICS ARE SAYING

“Egly-Ouriet's Champagnes are so good that I have begun buying them to drink at home.” Robert Parker, The Wine Advocate

“Egly-Ouriet manages for Pinot Noir: wines of riveting concentration and purity.”Andrew Jefford; The New France

“Few producers can equal Francis Egly in skill and experience, and larger houses cannot hope to emulate the cultivation norms…” Michel Bettane and Thierry Desseauve, The World's Greatest Wines

Egly Ouriet Grand Cru Blanc De Noirs NV

94 Points Wine Advocate

"The NV Brut Blanc de Noirs Grand Cru, from the Les Crayeres lieu-dit in Ambonnay, is one of Champagne's great wines when it is on, as it is here. Given the relatively recent disgorgement, the wine is somewhat shut down, but with time in the glass, gorgeous, perfumed Pinot notes begin to emerge. This is a totally refined, seductive expression of Pinot. Chalky, mineral notes frame the long .....

120 bottles only. The emblematic wine from Francis Egly and the one that first brought him international acclaim. It was Michel Bettane, the influential French critic, who encouraged Egly to bottle this single vineyard wine and the first vintage was 1989. As you will know, this wine has always been the product of a single vintage. This is no longer the case. The cuvée offered today is the f .....

Egly Ouriet Grand Cru Brut Tradition NV

92 Points Wine Advocate

Perhaps the best introduction to the wines of Francis Egly. This is a wine that does not require any bottle age. It can certainly age on cork for several years but why wait? It is stunning right now! This is all about low-yield, Grand Cru Pinot Noir from brilliant sites. Natural fermentation with wild yeasts only. The first period of the élevage lasts almost one year with the wine remaining .....

"The NV Extra-Brut Grand Cru V.P. Viellissement Prolonge is Pinot Noir from Grand Cru vineyards in Bouzy, Ambonnay and Verzenay that spent 70 months on its lees. This is the most intense wine in the Egly-Ouriet line-up. White truffles, roasted nuts, honey and candied apricots are layered beautifully in this creamy, expansive Champagne. Early tertiary notes make this an excellent choice for dr .....

"(100% pinot meunier; aged for 36 months on its lees and disgorged in July, 2012):  Bright yellow-gold.  Smoky, deeply pitched aromas of poached pear, chamomile, honey and truffle, with spice and mineral notes gaining strength in the glass.  Offers an array of ripe orchard fruit and spice flavors lifted by gentle acidity.  Rich but lively, finishing with excellent clarit .....

Egly Ouriet Ratafia NV

"Ratafia is the aperitif of Champagne, made with juice of Champagne berries muté (fortified) with grape spirit (along the same principle as Pineau des Charentes). Francis Egly's Ratafia is made from 100% Pinot Noir from a particular harvest, in this case 2008. After two years mellowing in barrel, the wine was bottled in 2011. We recommend serving this chilled either as an aperitif .....
