Gerard-Boulay Winery

A star producer based in the Chavignol region of Sancerre (considered to be the Grand Cru region of the appellation) where the soil is sheer chalk and allows him to produce stunningly mineral wines reminiscent of Chablis. All wild ferment and minimal handling, these are very distinctive wines and always very limited in Australia.

WHAT THE CRITICS ARE SAYING

“The Boulay style is a world away from the regular refreshing but forgettable norm….…[it] should really be compared with a white burgundy in terms of its rewards and complexity.” Jancis Robinson MW

“A conscientious grower with a growing collection of old vines; Boulay’s wines – while delicious in youth – can be riveting after 7-12 years.”
David Schildknecht, Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate

Gerard Boulay Clos Beaujeu Sancerre 2012

"A small parcel of 30 to 60 year old vines on Le Cul de Beaujeu is the third great site of Boulay. The soils here are pebbly and calcareous ? the caillottes ? and the site is strewn with fossilised gravel which, along with the 60% gradient, make this a parcel very difficult to farm. Clos de Beaujeu is the dark heart of Boulay's vineyards; the source of its inkiest, earthiest wines. Simila .....

Gerard Boulay La Cote 2011

Boulay's La Côte comes from the majestic La Grande Côte vineyard, a steep south to south-east facing hillside on the outskirts of Chavignol. This is Boulay's coolest parcel and the last to be picked. The site's soils are rocky Kimmeridgian limestone (like the terres blanches but with perhaps a little more clay). Boulay picks late and delivers a wine with resounding density .....

Gerard Boulay Monts-Damnes Sancerre 2012

"Monts-Damnés (pronounced mon-dannay) is arguably the most renowned vineyard in Chavignol. Drinking some great juice from Monts-Damnés leaves you in little doubt that Chavignol is capable of producing the most textural, mineral, uplifting and sublime whites in all of Sancerre. Boulay's bottling comes from 45 year old vines in one of the steepest inclines of this majestic vin .....

Gerard Boulay Sancerre Comtesse AOC Blanc 2014

"Pierre Bréjoux, when Inspector General of the Appellation d'Origine Contrôlée board, noted that there are some wines of Sancerre that "...one would like to have a throat as long as a swan's neck so as to taste them better." Enter Boulay's Comtesse, a wine as profound and gorgeous as Sancerre can get. This rare bottling comes from 0.40 hectares of 65 .....

Gerard Boulay Sancerre Tradition 2015

"Boulay's Tradition throws you straight in at the deep end. From the first nose and sip, you know that this is not your typical bistro Sancerre, but something far more serious. Sourced from mature vines rooted entirely within the confines of Chavignol, the wine is naturally fermented and aged in tank, on lees, before bottling with only the gentlest filtration. Rich in gorgeous aromas of p .....
