Jean-Paul-et-Benoit-Droin Winery

The Droin family is one of the oldest wine producing families in Chablis with over 5 centuries of wine production and have been influential in success of the appellation by helping to establish and being active members of its various associations and regulatory bodies over recent times. Today the family domaine is managed by Jean-Paul and Benoît Droin, the 13th and 14th generations respectively.

As you would imagine 500 years gives you plenty of time to acquire vineyards. The Droin’s have 25 hectares of vines and arguably the best family owned portfolio of vineyard holdings in the region with superbly sited parcels in 7 of the top Premier Crus and 5 Grand Crus.

Benoît now runs the vineyards and cellar to carefully watch every stage of production. He is not ‘bio’ but says he is very close using only a minimum of treatments for mildew.

Production follows the traditional practices of the region although the domaine was one of the first to return to aging in oak in the 1980s. Benoît has reduced the percentage of oak aging for the wines and now matches each elevage regime to suit the Cru and the vintage. The Chablis and Petit Chablis are vinified entirely in vats while the Premier and Grand Cru are partially aged in barrel.

We were very impressed with the wines of this immaculate domaine as they offer a finely honed blend of both traditional and modern styles and the difference between the various Crus is crystal clear when tasting through the range.

Interestingly Benoît does not battonage his wines, something that is standard practice to flesh out un-oaked cuvees that may otherwise underwhelm. This means that even in warmer years like 2009, his wines still retain a strong mineral accent.

Jean Paul et Benoit Droin Chablis Monte de Tonnerre 1er Cru 2011

92 Points Allen Meadows, Burghound

"Discreet but not invisible wood frames an elegant and high-toned nose of dried flower, pear, white peach and sea breeze nuances. There is impressive volume to the notably ripe, forward and enveloping medium weight plus flavors that brim with dry extract before culminating in a strikingly persistent finish that is slightly drier than that of the Mont de Milieu. This is also already accessib .....

Jean-Paul et Benoit Droin Chablis 2012

90 Points Burghound

Le Guide des meilleurs Vins de France 2015, La Revue du Vins de France. 14.5/20 - (Only Dauvissat scored higher on basic Chablis 2012!)   “The 2012 Chablis is a blend of several parcels on Kimmeridgian soils. It is certainly a step up from the Petit Chablis, imbued with much more tension and minerality. The palate is clean and fresh with a touch sour lemon and a terse, stony, slig .....

Jean-Paul et Benoit Droin Chablis 'Cote de Lechet' 1er Cru 2011

91 Points Allen Meadows, Burghound

"While there are the hallmark citrus aromas in evidence the predominant character at present is a smoky mineral reduction. There is good detail and vibrancy to the mineral-driven flavors that culminate in a ripe, delicious, sappy and persistent finish. This too will drink well early if desired. (89-91)/2015+" 89-91 Points Allen Meadows, Burghound "No oak for this cuvee. Yellow .....

Jean-Paul et Benoit Droin Chablis Grenouille Grand Cru 2012

93 Points Wine Advocate

"The 2012 Chablis Grand Cru Les Grenouilles has a very pixelated nose with hints of pinecone in the background. It opens nicely with aeration. The palate has good weight and volume in the mouth, just the right amount of spiciness, a dense Chablis with citrus fruit on the burly finish intent on making a good impression – which it does. Superb. Drink now-2028." 93 Points Wine Advocat .....

Jean-Paul et Benoit Droin Chablis Les Clos Grand Cru 2012

93 Points Burghound

"The 2012 Chablis Grand Cru Les Clos is the most reticent Grand Cru on the nose, with tightly wound minerals that deserve two or three years in bottle. The palate is very well-balanced with a fine line of acidity. Citrus lemon and orange rind at the front of the mouth and a wall of minerals at the back, and yet it is not giving much away at the moment. This is a Les Clos for the cellar. Dri .....

Jean-Paul et Benoit Droin Chablis Mont de Milieu 1er Cru 2012

91 Points Wine Advocate

"The 2012 Chablis 1er Cru Mont de Milieu comes from a sunny exposure that Benoit suggested creates Chablis akin to Condrieu. That is borne out in the aromatics, which offer an attractive, oily bouquet with touches of honeysuckle and quince developing. The palate is very well-balanced, quite oily and smoky with touches of Mirin toward the spicy finish. What a fascinating Chablis – one .....

Jean-Paul et Benoit Droin Chablis Montmains 1er Cru 2012

91 Points Wine Advocate

"The 2012 Chablis 1er Cru Montmains comes from marl soils. It has a more expressive nose than the Vaillons with engaging wet limestone scents. The palate is quite spicy on the entry with a touch of black pepper lining the citrus fruit. It has good depth and tension, with a very lively, nutty finish. Excellent. Drink 2015-2021." 91 Points Wine Advocate REVIEWS ON SOME PREVIOUS VINTA .....

Jean-Paul et Benoit Droin Chablis Vaillons 1er Cru 2012

90 Points Wine Advocate

"The 2012 Chablis 1er Cru Vaillons has a reticent nose, tightly wound and lacking the fruit intensity that I was expecting. The palate is much better with saline notes threaded from start to finish. This is lively and tense, but it needs the aromatics to wake up! Drink 2015-2020." 90 Points Wine Advocate "This is very different from the Vaucoupin with its spicy and intensely f .....

Jean-Paul et Benoit Droin Chablis Vaudesir Grand Cru 2012

93 Points Wine Advocate

"The 2012 Chablis Grand Cru Vaudesir has an engaging, linear, flinty bouquet that unfurls nicely in the glass. The palate is silky smooth and harmonious on the entry with orange zest and lemon curd. This is a feminine, refined Chablis, supremely well-focused, a Chablis that is almost caressing on the finish. Drink now-2020." 93 Points Wine Advocate
