Larmandier-Bernier Winery

Like Egly-Ouriet, Larmandier-Bernier has been rated as one of Champagne’s top five producers by Andrew Jefford in his celebrated work, The New France, [Mitchell Beazley]. This estate is meticulously run by Pierre Larmandier and his wife Sophie. Pierre’s family has owned vineyards in the Côte des Blancs since the Revolution. The estate is now 15 hectares, predominantly in Vertus, at the southern tip of the Côte des Blancs, yet there are also holdings in Cramant, Chouilly, Oger and Avize. The vineyards are biodynamically worked and the average age of the vines is 35 years; most Champagne vineyards are considered ‘old’ and due for replanting at 20 years. Yields are kept very low by Champagne standards, 50 hl/ha on average.

WHAT THE CRITICS ARE SAYING

“These wines from Pierre and Sophie Larmandier are exceptional in every way. Larmandier practices a non-interventionalist philosophy in the vineyards with an emphasis on low yields. A similar approach is taken in the cellar, where the wines are fermented with natural yeasts and bottled with low or no dosage in order to exalt the qualities of the sites the estate works with. The Larmandier-Bernier Champagnes are some of the purest and most utterly engaging wines being made in the region today. I can’t recommend them highly enough.” Antonio Galloni, The Wine Advocate, December 2008

“Few growers’ ranges in Champagne are as consistently outstanding as that of Larmandier-Bernier” Andrew Jefford, The New France

“This is one of the top six producers on the Côte des Blancs.” Tom Stevenson, World Encyclopaedia of Champagne

Larmandier Bernier Brut Tradition Vertus 1er Cru NV

A blend of 80 per cent Chardonnay from the Côte des Blancs and 20 per cent Pinot Noir. The fruit is hand-picked predominantly from the 2007 vintage with one-third reserve wines. It has less than 4gm dosage so this Brut is also an extra brut! A full, rich wine with a lovely creamy texture and a striking earthy lick to close. This is Larmandier's ode to the traditional, house styles, alt .....

Larmandier Bernier Champagne Terre De Vertus 1er Cru Non Dose 2009

96 Points Tyson Stelzer

"Drawing life from the shallow chalk along the road to Le Mesnil-sur-Oger, this is a blanc de blancs that expresses more soil than sky, in a palate more about mouth-embracing, intensely textured minerality than fruit. Crystalline freshness of lemon blossom, pure grapefruit, white peach and even lime is set against a background of subtle complexity of fig and mixed spice from oak fermentation. .....

Larmandier Bernier Cramant VV Grand Cru 2007

From old vines between 48-70 years old on a south-east facing slope within Cramant. It's a tiny cuvee from a sensational terroir and we get very little; normally around 120 bottles for Australia! The deep root system of the vines the diversity of the old stocks contribute to the complexity of the wine. It's a fascinating contrast to the Vertus, much more opulent, stone fruited and creamy te .....

Larmandier Bernier Latitude Champagne Brut Tradition Vertus 1er Cru NV

"This replaces the wine known as Brut Tradition, although it is now 100% Côte des Blancs Chardonnay. The fruit for this wine is predominantly grown, as it always has been, in vineyards on the southern side of Vertus. These are vineyards on roughly the same "Latitude", and this new name also hints at the breadth of texture that the wines from these vineyards tend to offer up, e .....

Larmandier Bernier Longitude Brut Blanc De Blancs Vertus 1er Cru NV

93 Points Nick Stock, Good Wine Guide 2011

"This NV drinks with style and distinction to rival most houses's vintage wines, showing browned apple and spiced almond biscuit aromas - rich, savoury and complete. It has weight and depth - the quite ripe fruit gives a rich impression - some white musky lift, and a chalky, long finish." 93 Points Nick Stock, The Age/SMH Good Wine Guide 2011   "The NV Brut Blanc de .....

Larmandier Bernier Rosé De Saignée Brut 1er Cru NV

96 Points Wine Advocate

"This is one of the most remarkable champagnes I have ever tasted. Quite a deep pink, it is almost impossibly perfumed - like a really good red burgundy, with forest fruit and spice aromas - and is intense, elegant, entrancing, crisp, juicy and endless in the mouth. Wow!" Max Allen, The Weekend Australian Magazine.    "Larmandier-Bernier's NV Extra Brut Rose de S .....

Larmandier Bernier Terre De Vertus 1er Cru Non Dose NV

"The NV (2007) Brut Blanc de Blancs Premier Cru Nature Terre de Vertus is another fabulous wine loaded with impeccable pedigree and sheer class. It is a rich, vinous Champagne that completely covers the palate with layers of intense fruit. This is a more linear, focused style than the NV Premier Cru. White peaches, flowers and chalk are some of the notes that wrap around the finish. The Ter .....
