Complementing his Mengoba venture, Pérez is also involved in other bijou projects in the wider region. One is in León - the capital of the province of León, situated in the northwest of Spain. Here Greg is working with the obscure Prieto Picudo, a variety he describes as "a tannic grape that we still need to come to know better," he says. Bottled under the brand name Preto we have two wines from this unique mission, both from highland vineyards in Pajares de los Oteros and both more supple than Greg's summation of this variety may suggest; the Preto tinto, a juicy, crisp plum-skin scented example of Prieto Picudo, and the more serious and structured Finca La Silvera, made from the oldest vines in the same vineyards (80 years old).
