The tiny 2 hectare plot is close-planted and incredibly low yielding….. it takes two vines to make a single bottle of Domaine A Pinot Noir. Multiple clones are open vat fermented with regular racking and hand plunging. Then there is extended maturation in seasoned French oak Barriques for 18 months and resting in the cellar until Peter deems the wine ready for release. The wine is a deep ruby/red ochre in colour, the softness showing a little age. An intriguing nose with a definite departure from the often, very gamey, savoury vineyard character. Aromas of exotic spices of nutmeg, cinnamon, sage and black cherry with hints of sweet clove and iron shavings. Like all Domaine A Pinot, it has a savoury focus and structure, with great intensity and depth of flavour. However this release also shows an exuberant pinosity and a hint of dried eucalypt, not often found in previous releases. Preserved cherry, blueberry, lots of spice with subtle dried florals blended in and a sprinkling of chocolate powder. Don’t let the solid concentration of silky, grainy tannins deceive you, this has an incredibly long finish and is still in its infancy. There are many years of enjoyment ahead for the enthusiast or collector…..only if you can keep your hands off it for that long!
