Dry. Chenin Blanc. Unlike most of Montlouis, which is on clay and flint, this newly planted vineyard (1999), overlooking the Loire River, lies on a pocket of clay and limestone. The name Bournais refers to the particular type of limestone found here. The vinification here is exactly the same as les Choisilles, yet the wine is palpably distinct thanks to the very different terroir. This is stunning Chenin Blanc. While it’s certainly no ‘better’ than the wine above, it is more mineral-infused, with both a pulpy texture and an intense, crackling energy that charges the palate and keeps the drinker coming back again and again.

“A fine, open, effusive suggestion of minerality on the nose. Sweetly polished fruits on the palate, fine and expressive. It has a polished, white stone, soft white peach character, with some real substance within the wine, in keeping with the limestone soils. Very impressive.”
