Product Description

Brancellao is believed to be the oldest indigenous variety of Galicia and is nearly extinct. In 1850, odium dramatically reduced the number of vines and near the end of the 19th century, the phylloxera louse provided the final blow. The variety was actually lost to the Ribera Sacra region and it was Algueira that recuperated this variety for the area. The first vintage was 2009 and only 900 bottles per year have been made since. This then, is not only rare, it is liquid history in the making. Fernando González believes Brancellao has what it takes to eventually become the subzone's signature, indigenous variety, which is why he and others are now busy planting more cuttings. The evidence of this wine, and the previous releases that we have shipped, suggests he is right. It's a wonderfully pure, medium bodied, perfumed wine. The nose and palate both suggest all kinds of forest fruit, pine needles and ground nutmeg. In the mouth the wine delivers the kind of elegance, freshness and deliciousness that we never dreamt of finding in Spain even a decade ago. It floods the mouth with perfume and lacy freshness. An incredible wine and another Galician arrow though the heart of Spain's image for over ripe and oaky reds. As a young wine this offers what Côte Rôtie promises but seldom delivers; a wine of unique perfume, elegance and detail. Perhaps it will not age as long as the best Côte Rôtie - time will tell. 100% whole bunch. Vivid ruby. Exotically perfumed scents of cherry, red berry preserves and incense are complicated by fresh tobacco and smoky minerals. Sharply focused black raspberry and floral pastille flavors display impressive depth and sweetness, with subtle, smooth tannins adding grip.

Sharply focused black raspberry and floral pastille flavors display impressive depth and sweetness, with subtle, smooth tannins adding grip. Suavely plays power off of finesse and betrays no excess weight. Spiciness builds on the long, juicy finish, which echoes the floral note."
