Product Description

Les Restanques is the junior cuvée of Château De Pibarnon - it is the wine of a single, 4ha site that sits more than 200m above sea level. Restanques is the local name for the hillside terraces on which the vineyards are planted and this site typically produces a lusher, silkier style of Bandol when young so it doesn't quite make the same old bones as the cuvée classique below. Not that it needs to. It also has more Grenache (30 per cent) in the blend, which brings an additional plumpness to the palate. It is still 70 per cent Mourvèdre, a much higher percentage of this grape than you will find in most Bandol reds. The fruit is harvested by hand from the goblet vines with average yields of 35 hl/ha. The wine is totally destemmed, fermented in foudre, and aged in oak barrels of different sizes until bottling. Bottled and released earlier than the classique, the 2012 Restanques is essentially a more approachable version of this Domaine's grand vin. The tannins are also super fine, giving centre stage to the wines' fruit notes of blackberry, dark cherry, anise, and dried flowers. With the higher dose of Grenache, it's more lifted than the estate Bandol, with terrific brightness and prettiness and a perfumed finish suggesting the fruit notes listed above but also some creeping, magnificently savoury characters like wild lavender, balsam and bay. All in all, a cracking value Bandol with some secondary, aging notes just starting to complex things. The 2012 continues that journey, bringing with it the essence of Provence. There is great stature, great presence and much deliciousness for a Bandol at this price point. Importer's Note
