Product Description

Estaladiña is an ancient indigenous Spanish vine that has only just managed to stave off extinction. Today it is so rare it has dropped off the list of permitted red varieties in Bierzo. Hence, anyone bottling an Estaladiña-dominant wine can only use the Vino de Mesa category. A few hardy souls have persisted with this fighting variety and so several small plots remain, dotted around the Alto Bierzo. This comes from one such, 25-year-old parcel, planted in Cacabelos (540m ASL) in a poor clay soil strewn with large boulders. One of the reasons that Estaladiña fell from grace was that it is very difficult to manage in the vineyards and in less shrewd hands it is prone to produce a style of wine that has been deemed out of touch with commercial realities: jet black, tannic and decidedly old school. While this is never going to be a key player in Gregory Pérez's line up (he only harvests enough fruit to produce 100 cases) the variety has clearly piqued his interest, just as this wine piqued our taste buds. This is another wine that has come into its own over the past few months. When it first landed it was as if the tannins had imploded, taking the wine's fruit down with them. Last week, it was a different beast altogether - round and plump with a juicy core of dark fruit with complementing notes of coffee, liquorice and spice. On the palate there is teeth-staining black plum and figgy fruit, all wrapped up in a velveteen cloak of ripe tannin. Unusual, yes, but a very tasty side of unusual. Limited stocks remain.
