60 per cent Mourvèdre, 20 per cent Syrah and 20 per cent Grenache. Singled out as "one of the finest wines for ageing" in Cairanne by La Revue du Vin de France, the Haut Coustias is the Alary brothers' tour de force; the finest and most distinctive wine of the Domaine. It is made from 65 year old vines planted in the rocky, limestone infused, blue clay soils (with 40% active limestone!), of the Saint-Martin vineyard. The grapes are sorted (three times) and destemmed, and the wine spends 24 months in large 22 hectolitre wooden foudres, reminiscent of a traditionally styled Barolo. Hewn from tiny yields of intensely flavoured Mourvèdre - backed up by the fleshier Syrah and Grenache - this is the lone 2012 of the offer and does itself proud. One of the great Mourvèdre based wines of the world; this has to be tasted to be believed. Super concentrated, the palate is round and mouth-filling but with powdery tannins that demand time. Despite the power there is also exquisite shape and balance on offer. Haut Coustias is the priciest of the l'Oratoire offerings though it offers fiendishly good value. It's a wine that would happily take on many a Châteauneuf-du-Pape at twice the price. Ding, ding.
