Product Description

Pazos de Lusco's Estate vineyard, the Pazos Piñeiro, doesn't conform to the postcard stereotype of Rías Baixas. Subsequently, the wine it produces tastes very different from the regional norm. This single, continuous southeast-facing vineyard (in the warm, dry Salvaterra do Miño subdistrict of Condado do Tea) is home to 5ha of old Albariño vines rooted in an intensely rocky field of sebrego, the small granitic pebbles of the region. The wine takes its cues from this stony landscape. It's a stone-scented, mineral and structured Albariño with a rocky, limpid mouth feel. This is a far cry from the simple, fruity wines that are more typical of the region. As far as density, minerality and presence go, this is Galicia's riposte to white Burgundy.

'Zios' comes from a selection of twenty year old Albariño vineyards in As Neves, a subdistrict of Condado do Tea. A warm dry growing subdistrict, the vines are planted at altitudes between 150-300 metres above sea level on decomposed granite. Lusco use a sorting table to select the fruit, very much a rarity in the Rias Baixas, and the yield is cropped at a very low 40-45 hl/ha. Only 3000 cases are produced annually which gives you an idea of the dedication this Domaine has to produce only the finest expression of this grape as possible, no matter the price point. The 2011 is a lucid example of Albariño's ability to deliver refreshing and uplifting Riesling-like purity and drive. It's an immaculate, bright, pulpy, ripe white fruited wine with intense chalky notes. There plenty of flavor but also a refreshing Atlantic 'bite' and a spotless, lingering finish.
