Product Description

The fruit for this wine is 100% Barossa, handpicked from old, dry-grown sites. The Mataro component of the blend was sourced from two valley floor vineyards, one 90 year old bush vine vineyard in the Koonunga Hill sub-region of the Barossa Valley, the other a younger vineyard in the extreme south of the valley. The three old vine Grenache vineyards (30, 50 and 90 years old) are situated in the North and East of the valley. The majority of the Shiraz was sourced from a Koonunga Hill vineyard (at the northern end of the Barossa Valley) and a younger vineyard on the western extremity of the valley. The fermentations were carried out with indigenous yeast in small open fermenters, with 30% as whole bunches, prior to gentle pressing and maturation on light lees. All the components were matured in seasoned French oak and stayed on light lees, which helps retain fruit freshness and preserves natural tannin, prior to blending and further maturation in tank prior to bottling.

Of course we can't tell you the exact % of each variety in the blend as even if Pete knew, he's not telling. Many will be aware Schell tends to go all Jackson Pollock when it comes to blending; a little bit of this, a little bit of that...whatever tastes great, whatever feels right. This feels right. If GMS (or GSM) is the power trio of the Barossa, then Pete comes from the Hendrix/Cream school - his blends are not the heaviest is style and there is a looser more airy feel than the nail-it-to-the-floor weighty blend of yore. A spicy, fragrant and full-flavoured red with alluring aromatics of warm, exotic spice and red fruits. It offers fresh mid weight palate with strong cherry, leather and cocoa and dried herb flavour with plenty of depth and savoury charm to its ripe, plump fruit which is given levity and freshness from its high-grown tannins and sweet/sour acidity. Wicked value.
