Product Description

Pernand's five Pinot 1er Crus are all south of the village, close to the Corton hill. Historically, Pernand chose to suffix the name of its best red wine vineyard, east-facing Les Vergelesses, which continues into neighbouring Savigny-lès-Beaune (where it is then called Aux Vergelesses). The soil - stony on the upper part of the plot and more clay dominant at the bottom - gives a powerful and complex wine. Les Vergelesses produces intense wines and it is fascinating to compare with the Île des Vergelesses of this producer. This wine shows more noticeable tannin in its youth, while the Île, from more rocky, limestone-rich soil, shows more pretty fruit, perfume and finesse. From a plot of 47 year old vines this integrates tangy, plum, berry and floral Pinot fruit within a mouth-watering framework of chalky tannins and supporting acidity coming through at the end.

"This is also quite expressive with its perfumed essence of various red berries, dried flowers and mineral hints. There is a seductive mouth feel to the delicious flavors that are blessed with good dry extract quantities that buffer the relatively fine tannins and impart a sappy character to the lingering finish that displays no rusticity or austerity. This is really quite pretty and finer than it normally is."
