Crafted from low yields, Guilhem Goisot's 2015 Chardonnays are textural yet vibrant, crystalline wines; in most cases they are very similar to the 2014s only with another layer. The Auxerre Corps de Garde is culled from the lieux-dits of Belle Croix, Biaumont, Gondonne, Chaussan and Gueules de Loup, as well as a selection of parcels too small to successfully vinify separately. Across these sites vine age averages 35-40 years and the soils are a mix of both Portlandian and Kimmeridgian limestone. At this level the wine is raised exclusively in barrel (now including some 500-litre demi muid), one third new. The name comes from the family's 14th century guardhouse and cellar that was probably used as a hideout when the village was under attack in the medieval period. It's a wonderfully sappy and saline white with a core of quince, white peach and kernel notes and loads of spice and freshness on the close. Layered and approachable right now, this could accurately be listed and sold, like all of the whites here, as "white Burgundy".
