This comes from a very old clos (enclosed vineyard) on a rocky vein of hard limestone in the lower part of the Pouilly-Vinzelles slope. It is therefore classed as Mâcon-Vinzelles. Originally purchased, already with mature vines, by grandfather Bret in 1947, the oldest vines in this .7ha plot are now pushing 100 years old. The average age of the vines today sits at around 50 years. This has the classic Soufrandière 'thing' going on; coiled fruit/acid/mineral tension that produces a sense of weightlessness on the palate and buzzing, minerally length. The palate ripples with verve as the crisp, citrus-flecked fruit dances around the palate with Chablis-like vitality, before letting rip with spice on the finish. Precise, intense, electric Mâcon. Excellent stuff.
