Product Description

Jo Landron's tour de force Muscadet comes from a single, six-hectare, particularly stony, biodynamically farmed vineyard, situated on a south-facing slope above the Sèvre river, in La Haye-Fouassière. Fief means a piece of land once associated with, and probably owned by, the local Abbey or Duke. This suggests quality, as the local rulers tended to keep the best parcels for themselves in the Middle Ages. Breil means next to the forest, which this parcel borders. The soils here are rich in silex (flint), river pebbles, quartz and granite over a bedrock of orthogneiss. So it's a geologically complex site. The vines are also surrounded by old walls (another sign of its historical significance) and while Muscadet is generally flat, Jo notes that this vineyard is on "a hill by local standards". Meanwhile, the vines are also open directly to the south, an ideal exposure to produce one of the region's benchmarks. The vines here are 45 years old and Landron prunes very short and then shoot thins accordingly to restrict yields. Hand-harvested, of course, the wine is slowly and naturally fermented before being raised in Landron's large, subterranean cement tanks. Our bottling spent a full 30 months on its lees resulting in a multi-layered, textural package that is about as far removed from the regional stereotype as can be imagined. Expect a wine crammed with seductive stone fruit, pressed flowers and mouthwatering citrus and cool stoniness to close. The notes below describe the wine well.

"At the time of tasting this is the current release of this cru communal prototype from Jo, and it continues to show some interesting evolution, with notes of elderflower, vanilla, face cream and blanched almond. A wonderful style ensues on the palate, polished but also energetic and poised, with a lovely energy and grip. I see lots of acid drive here, a reassuring finding in this vintage, wrapped in a supple and silky substance. And it has length too. This is a fine result, with excellent style, but it will be interesting to see how it develops over the next five-or-so years" 95 points, Chris Kisscak, The Wine Doctor
