Product Description

Pérez's single-site red is predominantly planted to Mencía with a tiny amount of the obscure local grape Estaldiña. The source vineyard (Espanillo) is Mengoba's crown jewel: an 80-year-old hillside site tucked up high in mountains where the soils (if you can call them that) are intensely rocky - essentially fragmented slate and decomposed shales. Not only are the vines old but the vineyard is managed in the olden ways, using ox-drawn plough, if you don't mind. You can see the two workers (Guinda et Jardinera) hard at it in the image above. The wine is entirely made and aged in a single wooden vessel (known as integral vinification). This means that the maceration on skins, alcoholic and malolactic fermentation and maturation on lees is all carried out without moving the wine. The barrel is 400-litre, French coopered.

Although markedly different to last year's wine (the 2012 is more fragrant and Pinot-like in its flow and silky structure) the intensity and sensual character of the wine speaks for itself. The fresh, classy aromatics offer up a fruity/savoury cornucopia of violet, black cherries, raspberries, rhubarb compote and fresh herbs while the palate is supple and velvety with similar characters backed up by Mencía's wild savoury pan-reduction characters. The finish is blinding, with silky-textured tannins carrying black fruit juiciness. A terribly impressive Bierzo writ large. We urge wine pros with a passion for fragrant, silky and refreshing reds to take a look.
