Shiraz / Syrah
750 mL Bottle
McLaren Vale, SA
"A blend of shiraz and grenache, old vines the source of the grapes. A fragrant bouquet speaks of the seamless union of the high-toned red fruits of the grenache and the black fruits of the shiraz; the role of tannins is important, that of oak less so. Will flower profusely with 2 or 3 years in bottle."

SC Pannell 'The Vale' Shiraz Grenache 2008
"The idea behind this blend is to make a wine with more complexity than a straight varietal McLaren Vale Shiraz. I’m looking to use Grenache to temper Shiraz’s natural mid-palate exuberance as well as add it’s characteristic musk and Turkish Delight perfume. The tannins of Grenache are sandy or gritty and quite different to the velvety tannins of Shiraz, and these are evident on the finish.
The 2008 vintage in McLaren Vale was a vintage of two very different halves. On the 3rd of March a heatwave commenced which lasted for 15 days above 35° C, a record for Adelaide. Prior to the heatwave, the vintage was looking wonderful and similar to the outstanding 1998 vintage. With the forecast in mind we picked early, at a lower potential alcohol, to control the fruit-dominant characters imparted by heat.
The 2008 Shiraz and Grenache parcels were harvested, on the 28th of February, at 13.7 beaumé, the lowest so far. The wine has wonderful natural acid balance, freshness of fruit and elegance – it is closest in style to how I envisage this wine to be". - Stephen Pannell
