Product Description

“It’s just Bannockburn Sauvignon Blanc from 2015,” remarks Michael Glover when I ask him about the new vintage of his cause célèbre. When pressed for more information… “Well, it’s a beast! Could be the best yet.” He’s not wrong. Once again it is quite unlike any wine from this variety that we have tasted, but it’s classic Bannockburn Savvy.  It opens with pugnacious aromas of green chartreuse, native honey and smoky undertones. This year the palate is plump with a layered, mouth filling texture balanced by mouth tingling freshness. There is real depth and the finish introduces notes of struck match, piquant blackcurrant and tangy, smoky grapefruit-like flavours. Another super exciting release under this label.

The winemaking modus operandi was similar to last year; the Sauvignon was fermented − one third on skins – in large format French oak (25 per cent new) and Italian coopered Acacia puncheons. Fermentation was natural, without inoculation, and the wines remained 10 months on their lees before bottling. Never one to rest on his laurels, Glover did not add any sulphur during élevage and just a smidge at bottling, “…just to see what happened”. This happened.

Bannockburn Sauvignon Blanc 2012
"You have to forget what you’re drinking – if you’re looking for sauvignon blanc, you’ll tie yourself up in knots – and just go with the ride this wine offers. It has sweet fruit, a variety of textures (from chalky, almost grainy/spritzy, to soft), a herbal inflection to the finish and various smoky, savoury nuances between. As is often the way with Glover’s wines – it took some time to come around to this, but I ended up loving it."

Bannockburn Sauvignon Blanc 2011

Yes, it’s under screwcap. It spends time on skins, goes through some (but not full) malo, spends time in 500 litre Acacia wood puncheons, and is 10 percent riesling. No doubt it has a raft of other quirks up its sleeve too. A line from the back label: “This wine aims to be uniquely Australian and uniquely Bannockburn.”

"Funky, rich, textural and shot with piercing, integrated acidity. Begs me to ask: what more could you want from a young sauvignon blanc? Gunmetal, mineral, passionfruit pulp, smoke and honeysuckle. Gravelly and assertive, a bit stinky, and a lot interesting. Flavour plus. Swallow, and feel it linger. Terrific wine."
