Product Description

Sourced from a vineyard in Echunga, 410 metres above sea level. Since 2010 Steve has worked with this vineyard that won him the Jimmy Watson Trophy in 2014. The fruit is grown on well-drained, granitic soil, Steve’s preference for Syrah.
Hand-harvested and vinified in small open-top fermenters with 30% whole bunches. A total of 17 days on skins before being sent to predominately old, large, French-oak vats for 10 months. Highly perfumed, vibrant and complex with prominent black forest fruits, tapenade, all spice, terracotta, dark cocoa powder and tamarind. The palate of this wine is the most interesting element. The flavours lead you to think that it is quite light, but as you taste the wine, the power and intensity unfurls to reveal a density that carries the palate further.

The purity of fruit is impressive to say the least. The blue fruits just keep on coming with notes of brambleberries, dark cherries, dark plums, pressed violets, acai berries, elderberries. Citrus, nutmeg, licorice, dark chocolate and charcoal follow. Very tight and chewy on the palate, which is so structured and fine-tuned. Full body, grainy and encompassing tannins and a long, steely finish. Edgy and silky at the same time. Drink in 2028. 95 Points James Suckling

SC Pannell Syrah 2012
"Hand-picked grapes were fermented with 25% whole bunches, the wine matured for 12 months in large French oak vats and puncheons. Vivid purple-crimson colour; the exceptionally fragrant bouquet leads into a palate with great texture from fine tannins, and black cherry fruit from the vineyard and vintage."

This cool climate Syrah was sourced from Echunga, 410 metres above sea level in the Southern Adelaide Hills. The fruit is grown on well-drained, granitic soil, my preferred soil type for Adelaide Hills Syrah 2012 in the Adelaide Hills was a terrific vintage of near perfect conditions. It was a vintage characterised by moderate daytime temperatures and cool evenings. This vintage was low yielding, which resulted in excellent fruit intensity and high natural acidity, which in turn made elegant, complex red wine. The conditions allowed us to ferment 25% of the Syrah as whole bunches to extract some of the ripe stem tannins – this is not a process we can use every year but adds to the overall complexity of flavours. This wine excites me every time I open a bottle. I believe cool climate Adelaide Hills Syrah has an enormous future. The Syrah is elegant and refined but, importantly, still has an underlying sense of power and depth of flavour, which is why it is such a joy to share and to see people drink.

SC Pannell Syrah 2010
"A great wine and look at the price! Exceedingly fragrant with decadently aromas of fruit cake, balck berry jam and expresso. the taste is full bodied, sumptuously textured with spice and liquorish. Oak is barely discernable, it's a fruit drive style."
