Vernaccia di San Gimignano specifically refers to the white wine made from the Vernaccia variety produced in the province of Siena in Tuscany near the famous scenic town of San Gimignano. It is unrelated to other Vernaccia vines in Italy. It has a crisp, refreshing quality with an attractive bitter finish.
It was Italy's first ever DOC in 1966.
Grape Variety: Vernaccia
Vinification: The grapes are gently pressed at a low temperature in order to maintain their exceptional fragrance. They are then fermented in stainless steel tanks using a cold fermentation process for about 12-18 days.
The wine continues to refine in stainless steel for 6 months, followed by 1 month in the bottle.
Alcohol: 13.50% alc. v/v
Colour: Straw-coloured with strong greenish reflection
Nose: Intense minerality with a perfume of white flowers (jasmine), green apple and peach with an almond after taste
Taste: Fresh, crisp and delicate on the palate with a strong mineral touch
Food Matches: Excellent as an aperitif with fish appetizers. Also pairs well with fish dishes containing saffron and truffle, rabbit, fresh cheeses, ricotta and caprino with herbs.
