Product Description

This is another style change for this wine which is now being picked far earlier – the 2015 is a dainty 11.5%. The winemaking looks similar to the cracking 2012 though, with the wine fermented on full solids in large oak and tank. This new look Bannockburn Riesling balances yeasty, lemon-barley perfume (this will settle in with time) with the kind of floral and gentle crispness that you get in the best Galician whites. It’s a far cry from the scud-missile power of the 2011/2012 wines. Says Glover, “I wasn’t comfortable with the Riesling at 13.5%. The minerality of the site [one acre of the Olive Tree Hill vineyard planted in 1976] is more obvious at lower alcohol,” before going on to note that “... many people will prefer the 2012, though!” Whichever style floats your boat, this is a most pristine, floral, and pretty dry Riesling. It’s delicate on both the nose and tongue, with notes of apple and stone, crunchy Granny Smith acidity and all the quaffability we have come to expect from the wines of this talented craftsman. It’s clearly very early days for this wine. By the way, eight dozen of this wine was bottled in Burgundy bottles. No, this isn’t Glover trying to mess with our minds (again) – he simply ran out of Riesling bottles!

REVUES ON SOME PREVIOUS VINTAGES

Bannockburn Riesling 2011

"I've never understood Geelong riesling. Or, perhaps I should say I've never understood it made in the traditional Australian way. Along comes an attempt made like a chardonnay, from old vines in a cold vintage, fermented by wild yeasts on full solids, partly in old barrels, kept on lees for six months and bottled with no attempt to remove phenolics - and suddenly the heavens open and the angels sing! After 35 years riesling has stepped up to the true benchmark of the legendary name of Bannockburn. Michael Glover, take a bow!"
