Product Description

The 2018 Pinot was drawn from three separate picks, two weeks apart; "... 1st pick for freshness, second and third for body and whole cluster inclusion". Everything was hand-harvested and put into three open fermenters with varying levels of whole clusters--the third pick was fermented with 50% whole bunches and as many whole berries as possible (no crushing). There was a natural cold soak for five days before the ferment kicked in. The wine was then pressed into French oak (20% new) at 2 baumé on heavy lees, where it rested for nine months before bottling without filtration. Again, this is simply an outstanding release that showcases the enormous potential of this vineyard. Look out for the intensely fragrant, whole-bunch spiced strawberry aromas so typical of the Meadowbank site, alongside the kind of silky, unforced elegance that stacks up against Australia's very best Pinot Noirs. It isn't a powerhouse (unlike many of our most revered examples), but rather a wine of great perfume, grace and serious deliciousness!

"Vines planted '87, 9 months in oak. Fragrant red fruits/flowers, the silky yet focused palate capturing all the primary fruit flavours that will burst into flower 3-5 years down the track. Unimpeachable balance and length." 96 points, James Halliday, winecompanion.com.au

"Brisk style, red fruits, firm acidity, aniseed and green herbs, oak in background adding a layer of sweet spice. Sour cherry and barely ripe strawberry, lick of powdery tannin, crisp and bright finish, sap and herbs, but with subdued sweetness of cranberry and redcurrant. It's typical of the vintage, but has a translucency and energy to carry it." 93 points, Gary Walsh, The Wine Front
