The vintage of 2019 will always be one of particular significance to both myself and Craggy Range. Having arrived just before the vintage, 2019 was the culmination of a long-held aspiration to be able to make wines from sites truly capable of producing world-class wines, for a brand that has the desire to see that through to fruition. The Craggy Range journey was now 20 years old and the combination of vine age and a vintage that will get etched in our short history as one of the greatest we’ve seen in Hawke’s Bay meant that grapes off our vineyard possessed the energy and potential rarely seen before.A wet spring gave way to a dry, warm summer. No disease pressure, long sunlight hours and cool nights; we were destined to obtain the acid/phenolic/flavour tension that I crave.
A complex but powerful mix of fresh cashews, cracked barley and white peach. Elegant and long. The stone fruit of the nose is replaced by citrus, a lemon line that is incredibly persistent. Fantastic tension that is kept in check by complementary oak.
