Phil and Chris Rose were pioneers of Marlborough viticulture planting their first vineyard on the banks of the Wairau River in 1978. They recognised the potential of the free draining stony soils, pure artesian water and abundant sunshine for premium viticulture early on. Originally growing grapes for other Marlborough producers, they branched out with their own label, Wairau River, in 1991. Today they are one of the largest family owned concerns in Marlborough with most of the family involved in running the day-to-day business. Wairau River have recently invested in their own state of the art winery and production facilities to ensure that wine does not leave the estate until it is bottled ready for consumption. This, combined with a change in winemaking direction, with Sam Rose as winemaker, has built on the quality of the wines. Judging by the recent accolades the critics agree. Wairau River is a benchmark Marlborough wine estate.
